Bold caution: a concerning scene unfolded in Rocky Mount as multiple dead vultures were discovered on Tuesday, December 2. Local and state agencies have swiftly mobilized to investigate and secure the area.
Authorities from Rocky Mount Police and Fire, Franklin County Public Safety, the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR), and the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) are on site at a wooded lot at the intersection of Dent Street and Franklin Street (Route 40). The site features a creek bed where a number of vultures were found deceased. A DWR biologist is en route to examine the birds and identify the cause of death. To keep people safe, caution tape has been placed around the affected property.
Officials emphasize that the town’s water treatment plant does not draw from this shallow creek, so there is no impact on the municipal water supply. Nevertheless, out of an abundance of caution, residents are advised to avoid entering waterways in and around the area until the investigation is complete and the area is cleared.
