They're kicking off a bold, nationwide effort called the Heart Valve Initiative, aimed at boosting patient results and healthcare standards through cutting-edge science and widespread education. This initiative brings together their work in patient awareness, medical training, care systems, and quality enhancements to create a bigger ripple effect for those affected and their doctors.
The Heart Valve Initiative builds on existing efforts by empowering healthcare providers and systems to spot heart valve disease sooner, intervene quicker, and follow the most up-to-date, evidence-backed guidelines. By weaving in new hospital accreditation programs, training for medical professionals, and tools to get patients more involved, it's set up to enhance every step of the care journey.
"The American Heart Association stands out as the ideal leader for a holistic approach that guarantees prompt identification, suitable interventions, and ideally, extended, healthier lives for those battling valve issues," remarked Mariell Jessup, M.D., FAHA, the Association's chief science and medical officer. "We're laser-focused on creating a supportive care network that guides patients from diagnosis straight to treatment, sidestepping avoidable hold-ups. We urge healthcare workers to act decisively: tune in closely, diagnose rapidly, and treat with foresight."
This groundbreaking initiative is backed by its founding sponsor, Edwards Lifesciences, which is expanding on their ongoing commitment to aortic stenosis – one of the most widespread and severe forms of heart valve disease. For beginners, aortic stenosis is when the aortic valve narrows, making it harder for the heart to pump blood efficiently, often leading to fatigue, shortness of breath, or even heart failure if untreated. The Target: Aortic Stenosis™ program leverages a data registry to streamline the patient path from noticing symptoms to getting a proper diagnosis, receiving timely care, and managing the condition long-term. Edwards Lifesciences also sponsors this program.
In the U.S., roughly 1 in 40 people lives with heart valve disease, with risks soaring as we age – particularly for those over 65. "With over 60 years of developing solutions for structural heart conditions, we've seen heartbreaking cases where valve disease slips under the radar until it's critical," shared Todd J. Beyond Edwards Lifesciences' core funding, the Heart Valve Initiative receives partial support from Kardigan.
