Unveiling a Timeless Classic: Takuya Matsumoto Revives a 70s Icon
The VANAC is a watch that reveals its true beauty the closer you inspect it, and it's even more captivating in person. I was thrilled to hold this masterpiece, especially in the presence of its creator, Takuya Matsumoto, Deputy Manager of Seiko's product design department. In a fascinating interview, Matsumoto sheds light on the meticulous two-year design journey involving over 30 designers.
But why does this watch still captivate people half a century later?
Matsumoto reveals, "The design's enduring popularity lies in its ability to capture the vibrant cultural essence of 1970s Japan." The Showa era, when VANAC was born, is experiencing a cultural revival, and VANAC is at the heart of this renewed appreciation.
And here's where it gets intriguing: The watch's design elements, including the case, bracelet, dial colors, hands, and indexes, showcase a unique evolution from the 1960s King Seiko models. These distinctive features continue to charm modern audiences, decades after their initial release.
ESQUIRE SINGAPORE: What design elements were essential to preserve from the original VANAC?
MATSUMOTO: We were determined to maintain the angular case shape and the bold colors of the original, capturing its daring and rebellious spirit. Our goal was to create a timepiece with a strong visual impact, appealing to those who seek a watch that reflects their active and expressive personalities.
ESQ: How did you adapt the design to suit contemporary tastes?
MATSUMOTO: A significant change is the new index ring, which unifies all dial markings into a single, prominent feature, enhancing readability. This design choice also reinforces the model's identity.
The dial's horizontal stripe pattern draws inspiration from Tokyo's skyline, offering a unique perspective. The case design, resembling a solid block of metal, provides a sense of robustness. By removing the bezel, we achieved a sleeker look, and the larger case size adds a sporty, modern touch.
The bracelet's horizontally expanding stripes complement the dial, further emphasizing the Tokyo horizon theme. While the new VANAC may visually differ from its predecessors, it remains true to the original's spirit through its dynamic silhouette, bold presence, and refined elegance.
ESQ: What emotion do you aim to evoke in those who wear this modern VANAC?
MATSUMOTO: The Tokyo horizon concept symbolizes our desire to inspire VANAC owners to embrace new horizons, much like a king setting his sights on the unseen beyond. We hope the watch instills courage and confidence in its wearers.
ESQ: Was there a eureka moment during the design process?
MATSUMOTO: Absolutely! For the dial, we wanted to break free from traditional watchmaking. The 12 o'clock index, combined with a ring-shaped element, was inspired by power button icons on cars and laptops. We envisioned the dial as a 'start switch,' symbolizing the beginning of a new day when the watch is worn.
ESQ: How did you determine that the new VANAC design was complete?
MATSUMOTO: We crafted numerous prototypes, meticulously reviewing every detail. Interestingly, the design only felt complete when we tried on the final sample, bringing it to life. As a designer, I'm proud of the outcome, and I encourage readers to experience it firsthand in-store.
